Cricbay Champions league. Brain child of Cricbay Community. This was possible by shortening the 2 tournaments. And moreover it was possible by the efforts of all the teams who accommodated the shorter versions and nuisances involved with shortening the tournament.
But finally the Champions league starts this Weekend. A new and exciting format. And that too with SPLIT innings - The Aussie style. A few teams have already played this format in Bay Area. But for most of the teams its New.
In the past Team Captains, batting 2nd had a good idea of the target and could decide on how to set the batting line up. He had the flexibility to change the lineup midway if needed depending on his team's performance or number of wickets lost. But withSplit innings, irrespective if you are batting 1st or 2nd, will the Captain have the same thought process?
It will be fun to see both teams approach in the 1st 10 overs, wherein both teams will try to set a target. Interesting... Decisions of when to take the power play, where to place the fielders, will definitely add a thrill. How many teams have discussed this amongst them; about how to approach split innings. Well there is no room to experiment. 1st match itself is a KNOCK-OUT match. That adds more pressure.....
That said, lets see if the teams batting first, will get their big guns at the start or save them for later. Talking of big Guns, I categorize them as those players who score majority of their runs in 4s and 6s. Arn't these guys lazy. They dont want to run between wickets..... But these folks are the Main weapons and I believe they will make proper use of Power play settings.
Lets leave the thought process and strategies to the Captains. And lets re-cap on some Stats... with a Twist
(Stats are based on playing atleast 20 innings and bowling atleast 40 overs....
Talking of Big Guns, here are some folks you should be aware of. Hopefully you do not face them this weekend ....
For folks with 20+ innings and 200 runs. Max % of their runs were scored hitting the ball beyond the boundary line.

For folks with 20+ innings and 500 runs. These are the evergreen folks. Don't u wish, you had them in your team. All you bowlers watch out. They are going to come after you .....
Champs XI and Challengers seem to have most of these folks. No doubt Jayesh Patil won the Max 6s award at Bata Cup which concluded last weekend.

For that matter here are some unique records in Cricbay. Most of us might be aware, but still some interesting facts.
Highest run in an inning: Whopping 120 runs off 64 balls by Bala R (Chargers). The first ever century in Cricbay.
2 other players missed on their century: Ashish Chaudhari (Predators) 98* off 69 balls Rajat Sar (Champs XI) 92* off 47 balls
There are a few big guns that have more number of half centuries under their belt: Batsman | Team | 50s | Bala R | Chargers | 5 | Abhijeet Manohar | Extreme XI | 4 | Arvind Sridhar | Eagles | 4 | Rajat Sar | Champs XI | 4 | Chirag Gupta | Weekend Champs | 3 | Dilip Patel | Spartans CC | 3 | Jones Philip | TCC Chargers | 3 | Karthik Deivasigamani | Challengers CC | 3 | Rajendra Badadare | Cheers CC of Foster City | 3 | Rohit Chakravarthy | Challengers CC | 3 | Sandesh Bawdekar | Kuchh Bhi XI | 3 |
I wonder how many of these players remember the number of balls they faced to cross 50.
As there was another record during the regular season 2011. Fastest 50 was scored: Aleem Mohammed (66 off 22), scored 50 off 14 balls against Darkhorse CC. What a match that was. Arslan was chasing 149 and they lost just by 8 runs. If Aleem had stayed for another over ........ If wishes were horses .....
I can go on and on on out Batsmen, but lets highlight a few of our Bowlers.
Getting to the bowling side:
Another record was set this season: Robin George (Friends XI) took 7 wickets with bowling figure of 3.4-1-05-7
Previous 7 wicket haul was by the Max wicket taker in Cricbay. Manju Raja (Unknown XI). His bowling figures were 4-0-12-7
The Best bowling spell for me was that by: Madhusudhan Ramakrishnan (4-4-0-3) against Falcons on 11/28/2008.
Yes, my friends 4 maiden overs in one Match. I doubt if anyone can match this record.
To list some unique facts, we have many bowlers who have taken 5 wicket haul more than once. Here are the top 5.
Bowler | Team | O | M | R | W | Avg | Best | 5w | Manju Raja | Unknown XI CC | 440.50 | 29 | 1556 | 219 | 7.11 | 7/12 | 4 | Navaneeth Annadorai | Challengers CC | 333.83 | 33 | 1010 | 150 | 6.73 | 5/7 | 3 | Girish Jagtiani | Cosmos CC | 293.60 | 9 | 957 | 129 | 7.42 | 5/5 | 3 | Amit Sarin | Daakus | 355.33 | 13 | 1275 | 152 | 8.39 | 5/8 | 3 | Anil R | Syndicate CC | 192.33 | 10 | 706 | 73 | 9.67 | 6/6 | 3 |
Who is a better bowler. The one who takes more wickets with a good average, or who is more economical, or who has a better strike rate (wickets per over).
I can list those folks too, but never mind. Maybe some other time. Let me know what you think, As a bowler what do you think is the main quality ?
Well, I will end it here today. Next time I will highlight the All Rounders in our League. And some other stats with some more twist....
Let the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE begin and more importantly have fun playing Cricket on Weekends.
