Hacking stats - Head to Head stats

Few days ago I noticed that my team (WCW) was supposed to play FC for the first time this weekend. Given that both the teams have been around for a while and have played quite a few games, I wondered if this is a record and enquired on Cricbay Facebook group. Sheshu replied to that thread mentioning that, given our current database and stats pages, it would be tricky to figure this one out. So I thought why not spend some time this weekend hacking our stats data to get an answer.

I hacked up a quick java project to get answers. I ran data collection earlier this weekend, so not all results from this weekend are factored in these stats. Given that it was a quick programming hack, its possible that there might be some errors in either data collection/analysis. Also only teams playing in the fall open 2012 were considered.

For those who care, all the code was written in Java (with excessive use of Guava). All the data was scrapped/collected using curl. I did manually create a seed list of team ids by curl'ing/grep'ing/awk'ing points table html page for this season.

Team Records

Win/Loss Ratio

I sorted teams based on their win/loss ratio and ignored teams that have played less than 20 games. I figured 20 games cutoff would result in teams that have participated in regular and fall open at least once, making data statistically more significant.

Top 5

Hattrickers are clear leaders here, great job guys! Teams 2-6 are close to each other and a single loss for them can result in a re-shuffle.

  1. Hattrickers - 3.7692308
  2. Champs XI - 2.625
  3. Challengers CC - 2.5869565
  4. Weekend Cricket Warriors - 2.5454545
  5. Predators - 2.4130435

Bottom 5

I have read this quote somewhere - "Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing". I am sure teams below would want to change their habit!

  1. Monsters - 0.38297874
  2. Blazing XI [V11] - 0.3125
  3. Mission Cricket Club - 0.25641027
  4. Loony XI - 0.25
  5. Sunnyvale Champs - 0.22222222

Tied Games

Bunch of teams have played 3 or less tied games but only these ones managed to play more than 3. These teams must definitely live on the edge!

  1. Aryans CC - 5
  2. Maharajas - 5
  3. Absolute XI - 4
  4. Yuva XI - 4
  5. Cupertino Champions - 4
  6. Santa Clara Galaxy [T20] - 4

Abandoned/No Result

Bunch of teams have 4 or less abandoned games but here are teams that have managed more than 4. These teams must really be sick of rain.

  1. Wielders - 6
  2. Daakus -  6
  3. Royal CC - 5
  4. Burlingame United - 5

Head to head records

Frequent head to heads

I have always wondered as to which two teams have played against each other most often in Cricbay and the answer is Champs XI vs Dazzlers. Below are teams that have played against each other 7 or more times!

  1. Champs XI vs Dazzlers games played  - 9
  2. Aryans CC vs Champs XI games played - 8
  3. Friends XI vs Hawkes games played - 8
  4. Avengers [Eagles] vs Predators games played - 8
  5. Chargers vs Champs XI games played - 7
  6. Spartans CC vs Hattrickers games played - 7
  7. Dynamites  vs Mavericks games played - 7
  8. Avengers [Eagles] vs Immortals games played - 7
  9. Maharajas vs Knights games played - 7
  10. Bay Area Titans vs Weekenders games played - 7
  11. Mavericks vs Seamers games played - 7
  12. Absolute XI vs Hattrickers games played - 7
  13. Hattrickers vs Weekend Cricket Warriors games played - 7

Never Played

I ended up doing all this work to answer this question and the answer is East Indies vs Seamers. Here is the list of top 10 such head to heads (ordered by combined number of games played by two teams) that are yet to take place.

  1. East Indies vs Seamers combined total games played - 375
  2. Aryans CC vs Daakus combined total games played - 370
  3. Friends XI vs Champs XI combined total games played - 369
  4. Wielders vs Challengers CC combined total games played - 358
  5. Hattrickers vs Knights combined total games played - 357
  6. Absolute XI vs Challengers CC combined total games played - 356
  7. Dynamites  vs Weekend Cricket Warriors combined total games played - 349
  8. Fighting Clan vs Weekend Cricket Warriors combined total games played - 347
  9. Syndicate CC vs Strikers [Cosmos CC] combined total games played - 344
  10. Fighting Clan vs Birds XI  [Poker CC] combined total games played - 343

Saurabh, sunil himself was the center of attraction in one of the recent tied games of aryans.. we needed 5 to win of the last ball and he hit a 4 :-) In another one against mission cc.. they needed 6 of the last ball and umpire (Kartik of Phoenix) correctly signalled noball for having 6 fielders on the leg side and they got 3 of that ball and got another 2 of the next ball and tied the game :-) We have also come real real close quite a few times and either barely lost or won with a ball or two to go :-) Aryans love living on the edge.. or at least that\s the spin i would give now that i have the prefect hindsight ;-)

I mentioned that for win/loss ratio, team 2-6 are all clustered close to each other but I forgot to mention 6th team there which is Spartans CC with a win/loss ratio of 2.4074075. In fact they won again this weekend, which might have pushed them to 5th position.

Sunil, I think you and Ciby are conspiring to not play against each other :) Regarding Aryans tied games, were you or someone else part of all those games. It would be interesting to hear what its like to play so many tied games. My team has played just one and it was a roller coaster.

was interested in the last stat only. and also was surprised to know Daakus never played Aryans so far, so good addition to this info, Sunil. play a friendly game, guys.

Good one Saurabh. With regards to Aryans, we sure love taking the game to the last ball for "full paisa vasooli" ;) .... Last 2 games were decided off the last ball as well but unfortunately we ended on the wrong side of the result. With a Daaku preparing the schedule and an Aryan uploading in for eternity now, you should not be surprised if they haven't played against each other yet ;)

Saurabh Good Post !! I made some minor changes on title and the formatting of your post before approving. hope you are fine with it. We will try and incorporate some of the stats you created natively in the site in terms Winning Percentage, Tied Games etc.
